A Whole in One

Throughout the timeline of an athlete’s career it can only be expected that there will be success as well as failure. It sure doesn’t appear that way when the greatest golfer of all time is failing.

The number one golfer in the world seems like the number one loser. During the last couple of outings on the course he has looked miserable. You rarely meet a person that has not seen or heard of Tiger’s skills. Yet, at this time, his indiscretions seem to make more news than his accomplishments ever have. I’m pretty sure people are talking about golf more than ever now, albeit not really about the game itself. Maybe we forget that Tiger Woods is an actual person and people are cyclical just like the rest of the world. Evidently, the modern athlete is not allowed to make a bad decision on or off the field. Is that realistic?

  1. I remember about 2 years ago I would say, I thought there was no way on earth that Tiger would not break the record for most majors. Now, I'm not so sure he WILL. Golf is such a mental game, and the "new" Tiger just seems like he doesn't give a crap. I sure do hope he comes back though because when he is on, he is an amazing talent to behold.

  2. Golf is a game, not a sport. Perhaps Smackjabber should start discussing darts and lawn bowling next.

  3. Tiger WILL do it...just wait a year or so and he'll be back on top of his game. He's to good to stay this bad...and the thing is he's not doing all that bad, well minus the last event. He has finished 2, top 10 majors this year. Thats not horrid. Its just not Tiger. But Quazz, you talk like we should feel bad for the guy. If you make close to a billion dollars through marketing, when using your image to steer the public to whatever product your pushing. Then don't cry POOR Tiger when you get caught for being a dumb idiot and that same public is all over you. You can't have it both ways. He is well compensated to deal with these problems. He did it to himself. The modern athlete can make all the bad decisions he wants, he's just gonna hear it from the people he makes his money from. And they are well compensated to deal with these so called "problems" they are having.

  4. This is going to be taken the wrong way, but I've said time and again, the only thing Tiger did wrong from a public perception perspective was get married in the first place (and yes, I understand that it's a commonly held opinion that even his marriage was a stratgic poly born of the behemoth marketing machine that is Tiger).

I mean, look at Derek Jeter. Do you think he's never found himself in compromising situations with women of ill repute? The bottom line is that the mass marketed sports media will allow a superstar athlete to be a playboy in relative obscurity as long as you don't give them a moral scandal to plaster all over the papers and nightly news.
